The population of

residing in the town. The population density is 465.8 per sq. mile (or
179.8/kmē). There are 629 housing units at an average density of
178.2 per sq. mile (or 68.8/kmē). The racial makeup of the population is:
63.32% White; 16.18% Black or African American; 1.52% Native American;
0.85% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander; 13.99% from other races; and 4.14%
from two or more races. Hispanics or Latinos of any race make up
23.48% of the population.
Of the 565 households,
29.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.4% are
married couples living together, 18.2% have a female householder with no
husband present, and 35% are non-families. 29.4% of all households are
made up of individuals and 15.2% are made up of someone 65 or older and
living alone. The average household size is 2.62 and the average family
size is 3.20.
24.1% of the population is
under the age of 18; 10.3% from 18 to 24; 24.4% from 25 to 44; 19.2% from
45 to 64; and, 22.0% are 65 or older. The median age is 36 years. For
every 100 females there are 90.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and
over, there are 85.4 males.
The median income for a
household $21,964, and the median income for a family is $27,500. Males
have a median income of $20,114 versus $16,635 for females. The per capita
income for the town is $13,042. 25.7% of the population and 22.2% of
families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 33.3% of
those under the age of 18 and 27.0% of those 65 and older are living below
the poverty line.
