Street/Sanitation Worker, Class III

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

All applicants must:

  • Be at least 21 years old;

  • Possess a valid Class B Alabama Commercial Driver’s License with a good driving record;

  • Have earned a high school diploma or GED;

  • Have the ability to speak, read, and write English and to perform basic mathematical calculations;

  • Be in good health and physical condition;

Pre-employment drug screening is required.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Good knowledge of or ability to learn grasp safety procedures involved in work activities;

  • Some knowledge of the proper operating procedures for all related equipment;

  • Some knowledge of Departmental objectives and purposes;

  • Skill in the use of picks, shovels, chain saws, edgers, weed eaters, push mowers and other essential tools and equipment.

  • Ability to communicate well with others;

  • Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures and instructions;

  • Ability to use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and/or oral instructions;

  • Ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines;

  • Ability and willingness to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology;

  • Integrity, ingenuity and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks.

 

Work Environment 

The work is typically performed outdoors, where the employee is exposed to noise, dust, pollen, dirt, mud, grease, foul odors, machinery with moving parts, summer heat, winter cold, rain, wind, and other occasional inclement or adverse weather conditions.  The work requires the use of protective devices such as safety glasses, goggles, gloves, or masks. 

 

Physical Demands 

The work is typically performed while standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping and requires the lifting of light and heavy objects. 

 

General Scope of Work 

The principal scope of work includes, but is not limited to the performance of manual work associated with the repair, maintenance and beautification of Town parks, right-of-ways and related areas, buildings and others structures, collection and disposal of solid waste (both household garbage and bulk wastes); use of picks, shovels, rakes, and similar; use and operation of equipment such as chain saws, trimmers, weed eaters, push and riding mowers; use and operation of equipment such as light to heavy duty trucks, chippers, backhoes, and tractors. Supervision of solid waste collection process and procedure and completion of related written reports to supervisor; preventive maintenance and daily/weekly servicing of collection vehicles and equipment. The work is performed under the direct supervision of the Street/Sanitation Superintendent.

Examples of Essential Work (illustrative only)

  • Plants, waters, fertilizes, cultivates, mows and rakes grass;

  • Trims fence lines and the banks of drainage ditches;

  • Collects litter and debris;

  • Empties garbage cans;

  • Uses hand tools such as picks, shovels and rakes;

  • Operates power equipment, including chain saws, edgers, weed eaters, push and riding mowers, light to heavy duty trucks, chippers, backhoes, and tractors;

  • Informs supervisor of any needed repairs and/or maintenance;

  • Cleans and weeds flower beds, mulches around flowers and waters as appropriate;

  • Cleans flowers and prunes related shrubbery as necessary;

  • Cleans and paints concession stands, field houses and related or similar facilities;

  • Repairs windows, doors, plumbing and other fixtures;

  • Performs manual tasks in the installation of water lines, fencing, flag poles, benches and picnic tables;

  • Installs and maintains soccer goals, outdoor basketball posts, bleachers, gates, fencing, backstops and netting;

  • Monitors and maintains equipment in a safe operating condition and reports all damages to supervisor;

  • Cleans equipment and work area;

  • Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others fully and accurately  informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems;

  • Attends  meetings, conferences, workshops and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on the principles, practices and new developments in assigned work areas;

  • Responds to citizens in a courteous manner;

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
